The Remembrance Archive was a long-term, social media-based work. The foundation of the project is the idea that oppression is rooted in loss of memory (based on a quote by Paula Gunn Allen), so I posted one hand-drawn portrait every day to Instagram for several months in memoriam of lives lost to recent crimes of hate, fear, and systemic racism in recent years in the US. Each portrait is accompanied by some background information about the person, the incident, and any resources that can be used for further information, donations, etc.

This project was intended to memorialize people that have died by drawing their faces individually. I studied and learned each face, thought about who they were, and most importantly what their presence meant to their families, friends, and communities. By sharing with my community, I hope the people who have lost so much know that their loved one is remembered. As we remember and mourn, we can reflect on why lives were lost. We can be propelled to hold each other accountable and work towards reforming systemic violence.

The first video to the left was posted on the 75th day of The Remembrance Archive. The previous 49 days were dedicated to people killed during the Pulse Nightclub shooting, so I wanted to pause and look back on all their faces. 

The second video was made after the 50th portrait of men and women killed by police, shortly after the 100th day of the Remembrance Archive. I wanted to pause at this point and look back on their faces before continuing. The people drawn here are range from age 7-70. They are mothers, grandmothers, grandchildren, children, fathers, sons, cousins, friends. The only connection they have to one another is that they died at the hands of police. Some of their families have received a modicum of justice, but most have not. Their deaths happened after traffic stops, mental breakdowns, petty theft, and, sometimes, by accident. It is disheartening to read hundreds of stories that start small and escalate to the point of death. It’s exhausting when initial police reports are questioned or disproven, and there is still no indictment. This should go without saying, but it’s important to remember that they had full lives like you and me and they didn’t want to be a part of this group.
